My Favorite Audio Books, Podcasts, & Songs for the Road
Over the last couple of years, I’ve spent a whole lot of time in the car, driving between our home in Southern Indiana and Memphis, TN. My nine year old was diagnosed with stage IV cancer back in February 2018. The best known treatment was at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which was almost six hours south of our home. At the time, I had no idea how many hours would be spent on the road between So. IN and Memphis. I had no idea that my faith would be tested and would grow exponentially and my car would become my church.
My husband and I split our time between cities to keep life as normal as possible for our 13 year old son. I continued to provide for our family and keep our insurance while my husband took a leave of absence to be primarily in Memphis. We would/do spend our Friday and Sunday afternoons driving back and forth to and from Memphis, TN.
Roadtrip Every Week
On Fridays, we couldn’t leave until after school and after my work day. I was generally tired before we even got on the road. But tired or not, we were going. My son was no different. We would get in the car and the headset goes on and I’ll hear from him when he needed to pee. Some days this gave me pause, because I’ve missed an opportunity to connect with him. However, this also gave me the chance to feed my soul and listen to whatever I need to keep me awake.
On Sundays, we would spend as much time together before we had to head home. My boys would get a few more minutes hanging out and I would get a few more minutes just taking them in before we would head home, back to school and work. While my youngest would have a full week of chemo and sometimes even be inpatient for the week.
Needless to say, the departure was incredibly difficult and tear filled. The drive home was quiet as my older son listened to his music in the backseat. My drive would start out anxious and devastated, every Sunday. I’m the mom. I should be there. I NEEDED the Lord to reassure me all was going to work for our good, because it sure didn’t feel like it.
The car became my church.
That’s when I would crank up the praise music and let the floodgates open. Some trips Christ spoke to me through songs. Other drives it was listening to incredible audio books that would grow my faith or podcasts that felt like the authors were speaking directly to me. The car literally became my church and my faith would grow while on the road.
